Is it possible to see nebulae in any detail without using very expensive astronomical photography systems?
Looking at all those fantastic pictures in books and on the internet makes me want to get out there and see these things for myself (through a telescope, obviously), but is this possible from a back garden? Assuming there’s minimal light pollution, what could I expect to see from something such as a 600mm f7.5 Skywatcher Evostar-80ED DS-Pro? What eyepiece should I use to get the best views of nebulae?
You will never see much by looking with your eyes through a telescope. This is because all the pictures you have ever seen have been taken by cameras, from exposures lasting minutes, or even hours. It takes this long for the detail to be built up on the exposure. When you look with your eyes you are effectively viewing an exposure of a fraction of a second, so you can never see the fine detail.
As with any astronomical observation, the most important factor is the aperture of the telescope. The bigger the aperture, the more light is collected, so the more likely you are to be able to see dim objects.
The eyepiece is virtually irrelevant. Super high magnification will not increase the detail visible for stars. In fact, it is usually counter productive because it makes the field of view so small that finding what you want to look at can be very difficult, unless everything is set up perfectly. Nebulae can be quite large, so increasing magnification might show some detail, but at the cost of losing the “bigger picture”.
If you are genuinely interested in nebulae, you need to become an astro-photographer. Leave the direct eye observing for bright, local objects such as the planets.
