Is Your Garden Ready For Doomsday?
Is Your Garden Ready for Doomsday?
Most people don’t spend a lot of time worrying about end-times scenarios, but more people than ever are hyper-aware of the possibility that disaster can strike at any time. It just makes good sense to be prepared for things like earthquakes and flooding, and you can encorporate that into your gardening plans, even something like building a DIY greenhouse would benefit in many different ways.
You may have already stocked up on toilet paper and canned goods. But, what about your garden? Is it ready for a doomsday event?
- Thanks to worldwide organizations with an interest in crop preservation, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway was created in February of 2008 to preserve global crop diversity and create a safety net for growers worldwide.
Though a product of co-operation, the Svalbard seed vault was initially funded by the Norwegian government, in partnership with the Global Crop Diversity Trust.
- The continuing operating costs are also covered by these entities. However, each depositing member maintains control over their own property that is housed in the facility.
- Though there has been some controversy surrounding depositors with opposing viewpoints, such as Monsanto and Seed Savers Exchange, each member retains control over their own property, and no other depositor can question the ownership of what is being held for another member.
The Svalbard seed vault is not designed to be a primary storage area for any organization. Rather, it is the ultimate backup for the event that biological diversity is at risk. There are several reasons that this might happen. Organizations that grow out seed for sale can suffer from crop failures at any time. Some people are go out and use aeroponics AeroFlo growing systems and other small indoor hydroponics machines to help, which is a small investment really, as low as twenty bucks.
- It is also possible for power outages to risk the cold storage of long-term collections. Luckily, Svalbard relies on natural earth cooling to keep seeds safe for years to come. Regardless of whether doomsday ever shows its face in our lifetimes, a backup plan for biological diversity is always a good idea.
